About Word Counter

Whether you are trimming an essay to a word limit, fitting a meta description into a character budget, or timing a speech, you need accurate numbers fast. This free word counter online counts words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and lines in real time — the stats update live with every keystroke, no button to press. It also estimates reading time and speaking time, so you know at a glance whether your article is a two-minute read or your presentation script runs long. Everything happens locally in your browser: your text is never uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone.

Beyond the basic character count and word count, the tool breaks out characters with and without spaces, total lines, and the byte size of your text — useful when a form or API enforces a byte limit rather than a character limit. A Top Keywords panel shows your twenty most frequent words with visual frequency bars, helping writers spot overused words and SEO authors check keyword balance without pasting content into yet another site. Students, bloggers, translators, and social media managers can rely on it daily; there is no sign-up and nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions

How are reading time and speaking time calculated?

Reading time assumes an average pace of 225 words per minute, and speaking time assumes 150 words per minute — widely used averages for adult silent reading and conversational speech. Times under a minute are shown in seconds so short texts still get a meaningful estimate.

How does the tool count words and sentences?

Words are counted as sequences of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks, which matches how most word processors count. Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation — periods, exclamation marks, and question marks — and paragraphs by blank lines between blocks of text.

What does the Top Keywords panel show?

It lists the twenty most frequent words in your text, ignoring case and punctuation and skipping single-letter words, each with a bar showing its relative frequency. It is a quick way to spot repetitive wording or check that your target keyword appears often enough — but not too often.

Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?

No fixed limit. Counting happens instantly on your own device, so even book-length manuscripts are analyzed in real time, limited only by your browser’s memory.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser — your text never leaves your device and is never uploaded, stored, or logged. It is safe for unpublished manuscripts, confidential reports, and anything else you would rather keep private.

Is this word counter free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no ads on your text, and no usage limits.
