Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video for Messenger?
Messenger rejects files over 25 MB. Upload the video here, keep the 25 MB target, click Compress, and send the downloaded MP4. For a 1–2 minute clip you will usually keep 720p; longer clips drop to 480p or 360p to fit.
Why does the file come out slightly under my target instead of exactly on it?
The encoder reserves a small safety margin for the MP4 container and audio, and if the first two-pass result overshoots, a corrective pass lowers the bitrate a little. Chat apps and email check the exact byte count, so “just under” is the point.
Will the video quality be bad?
Quality depends on how many bits per second your target allows. The tool spends them well: two-pass encoding, a sensible resolution for the bitrate, and no frame-rate above 30 fps. A 25 MB budget keeps a 1-minute 1080p clip looking good; the same budget on a 10-minute clip necessarily means 360p. The on-screen estimate tells you before you wait.
What does “Auto” resolution do?
It chooses the tallest resolution that the bitrate budget can carry without visible blocking — roughly 1080p above 3 Mbps, 720p above 1.4 Mbps, 480p above 600 kbps, otherwise 360p. Set a maximum manually if you want a smaller picture with cleaner detail.
What is the maximum video size and length?
Uploads up to 300 MB and 20 minutes. Longer or larger videos should be trimmed first; the target-size maths cannot make a 20-minute 4K recording fit in 8 MB and still be watchable.
Are my videos kept on the server?
No. The upload is written to a temporary file so ffmpeg can encode it, and both the original and the result are deleted as soon as your download finishes. Nothing is stored, viewed or shared.
